The infamous SS 106 Jonica

Before ending in Reggio Calabria

the first half of this journey along the Calabrian coasts,

we must reveal the truth about the real conditions of the landscape

that will reveal itself to your eyes.

The infamous "SS 106 Jonica",

called the "Death Road", connects Taranto in Puglia to Reggio Calabria, crossing Basilicata and covering the entire eastern coast of Calabria. It is one of the most dangerous roads in Italy due to the high number of victims of road accidents and crosses what was, more than two thousand years ago, called Magna Grecia,

once one of the richest areas of the Italian peninsula,
now the most underdeveloped region.

In this blog, I will show idyllic images that do not faithfully represent today's reality.

This beautiful land, from the 1960s onwards,

it was destroyed by a wicked urban development

with monstrous kitsch architectures

that mimic the glories of the past,

and often left unfinished

that has annihilated a once paradisiacal landscape.

Driving along the SS 106 Jonica today,

this is mainly the scenario your eyes will witness

Thousand of years ago we were building architectures like this

today this is what we build

And it's not just bad architecture,
the whole territory is littered with garbage, debris, and wreckage.

Driving along this road

is an anthropological study experience

reserved only for those with a strong heart and stomach,

and that's also what makes it

an unusual, exciting, and daring experience.
