Next to Crotone, which I have already briefly talked about in the introduction of this blog, there is an area of extraordinary scenic and archaeological interest that goes from Capo Colonna to Le Castella passing through Capo Rizzuto.
The protected marine area of Capo Rizzuto was established in 1991 and managed by the province of Crotone which extends for almost 15,000 hectares and is the largest in Italy in terms of size.
Capo Colonna,
with the only remaining column of the temple dedicated to Hera Lacinia,
is the promontory that determines the southern limit of the Gulf of Taranto, but also the easternmost tip of the Calabrese peninsula,
eight kilometers south of Crotone.
The actual temple had the classic shape of Greek temples,
an imposing complex of 48 Doric-style columns over 8 meters high.
The sanctuary of Santa Maria di Capo Colonna,
is located near the archaeological area of Capo Colonna, on the Lacinio promontory, near Crotone, and houses a particularly venerated icon.
The current structure was built by the Basilian monks of Salice Salentino probably between the 11th and 13th centuries.
Punta delle Castella, better known as Le Castella,
is the southern end of the protected marine reserve,
10 km from Isola di Capo Rizzuto and 20 km from Crotone.
A seaside village is mainly known for the fortress and for its coasts
with sandy beaches of various thicknesses and colors
and for the cliff with Greek-Roman archaeological remains still visible.
Before listing the places to stay and eat,
we must mention the National Archaeological Museum of Crotone,
one of the most important in Calabria.
It is located on one of the bastions of the sixteenth-century walls,
a stone's throw from the Castle of Charles V, in the historic center of the city.
In the valuable collections preserved here,
the golden diadem of the Sanctuary of Hera Lacinia in Capo Colonna
stands out for its beauty.
